Introduction
For inculcating Sports, Physical Education and Youth Welfare in the mainstream of the education system of the State and for propagating and promoting Sports as well to cultivate the culture of sports, the State Government had made the necessary changes in the existing system and established independent Directorate of Sports & Youth Services in July 1970. For an effective implementation of the Government Schemes, Offices of the District Sports Officers were established in every district of the State.
For nurturing the Sports Culture in the state and for cultivating the sports talent available in the players for achieving higher goals at the international level, the State Government announced its maiden Sports Policy in the year 1996 which is the first sports policy in our country declared by any state. The policy was implemented across the state. After completion of the period of five years, in the year 2001, the State Government declared the Second Sports Policy for the period of 10 years. The main objective of this policy was “Fitness for all through Sports”. The Sports Infrastructure Development Plan came into existence through this policy. According to this plan,Construction of Sports Complexes started at every Divisional headquarter, District headquarter and Taluka headquarter. The reservation for sportsperson in Government and Semi-Government jobs came in existence through this policy.
After thoroughly reviewing the outcomes of the Sports Policy, the State Government declared new Sports Policy and Youth Policy in the year 2012. This policy enabled the Government to directly recruit the medalists of International competitions and the scheme is being successfully implemented. In addition, schemes like financial assistance for participating in an International Competition and financial assistance for preparation of International Competitions came in existence through this policy.
Youth Hostels are being constructed at every Revenue Divisional headquarter, and Youth Training Camps are being organized across the state which is the outcome of the Youth Policy.
