    The State Sports Policy

    Maharashtra is the first state in the country to announce a sports policy. The sports policy was created for the first time in 1996, considering the athlete as the focal point. The duration of this sports policy was set until the year 2000.

    • Taking into account the results of the 1996 sports policy and the direction of sports development, a new sports policy was announced in 2001.
    • The 2001 sports policy established ‘Fitness through Sports for All’ as the focal point, and necessary measures were suggested in this sports policy to instill the importance of physical fitness and healthy active living among all citizens, including the elderly and youth.
    • To determine the state’s sports policy, a committee was decided to be appointed under the chairmanship of the Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare according to Government Resolution No. Krida-Dho-2006/Pr. Kr. 167/06/KriyuSe-1, dated February 20, 2010. This committee included 45 members.
    • 58 important recommendations have been made in the sports policies. On April 20, 2012, the government approved the Sports Policy 2012.
    • On June 14, 2012, the Maharashtra State Sports Policy 2012 was announced, and a government decision was issued. Accordingly, government decisions for 11 schemes have been received.
    • New Revised Maharashtra Sports Policy: After the Maharashtra Sports Policy was approved in 2012, its duration was set for 10 years. With the completion of 10 years of this sports policy, a proposal will be submitted to the government to form a committee to prepare a new revised Maharashtra Sports Policy.

      New Disability Sports Policy: A proposal to form a committee to prepare a new disability sports policy was submitted to the government on November 21, 2023, during a meeting organized with Honourable Chairman, Ministry of Disability Welfare, Maharashtra State.

      1. A plan to honor international medal-winning athletes and their sports coaches by giving them cash prizes.

      2. Regarding the development of wrestling training centers.

      3. Organizing training camps for sports teachers.

      4. Organizing training camps for sports teachers.

      5. Organizing sports training camps at the state level.

      6. Surveying sports facilities in the state.

      7. Incentive grants for secondary schools and junior colleges to promote sports.

      8. Financial assistance plans for creating sports facilities.

      9. Approval for appointing sports coaches on honorarium basis in educational institutions.

      10. Providing financial assistance for training, sports equipment, and coach fees to international athletes.

      11. Awarding prizes to encourage sports teachers.

      12. School sports competitions.
