In order to nurture the maximum number of international and Olympic-standard athletes from Maharashtra, efforts have been made to select talented athletes from the state and provide them with systematic training, balanced nutrition, and modern sports facilities. To promote a structured approach and instil a sports culture, sports training centres have been established in Pune, Kolhapur, Nashik, Thane, Amravati, Nagpur, Gadchiroli, Akola, Ch. Sambhajinagar, Pravaranagar (District Ahmednagar), and Sangli.
However, due to the closure of the sports training centres in Sangli and Pravaranagar by the government in 2019 and the classes being held in Nagpur for the trainees from Gadchiroli, currently, guidance is provided in 16 sports disciplines including Judo, Gymnastics, Hockey, Shooting, Football, Swimming, Athletics, Wrestling, Badminton, Archery, Handball, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Triathlon, Cycling, And Boxing in the 8 sports training centres. Currently, in the year 2025-26, a total of 492 trainees (Residential: 278 boys and 157 girls totalling 435 and non-residential: 29 boys and 28 girls totalling 57) are training in the 8 sports training centres.
- Direct Admission Process: Under the direct admission process, players who have excelled at the state level or participated at the national level in sports offered at the sports training centers are granted admission.
- Sport-specific Skill Test: Under the sport-specific skill test admission process, skill tests are conducted for players who have participated at the state level in the sports offered at the sports training centers, and based on their performance, admission is granted.
The Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex has been established as a central hub in Pune, and the government has granted permission to start an independent school for the sports training of Pune’s sports scholars. An independent school is currently operational in the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex for the training of students from the Sports Academy, which is running from classes 1 to 12 in semi-English and Marathi medium on a 100 percent grant basis. Separate teachers and non-teaching staff have been appointed for the school.
